The Premiers: Easts (6th premiership)

The Tigers went back-to-back for the first time and also won both the President’s Cup and Scott Trophy, cementing the team of Des Morris, John Lang, Wayne Lindenberg and Allan Currie as surely the greatest in club history.

There’s an argument to be had that the Coorparoo team of the 1920s was more consistent, but, despite numerous opportunities, the ‘Roos of Mick Kennedy, Paddy Crouch, Charlie Thorogood, Et Al only managed the one premiership, in 1923.

Most tries: Peter Leis, Redcliffe (22)

The Dayboro dynamo had already spent 12 seasons in first grade, but it turns out he was only just hitting his peak. Leis’s 22 tries in ’78 were the most in a single season since Bobby Cook’s 27 for the great Norths team of 1963.

Most points: Ian Pearce, Redcliffe (281)

In 1975, Bruce Warwick of Norths set a new mark for points in a season with 255. ‘Bunny’ Pearce blew past that with a brilliant performance in ’78, collecting 15 tries and 118 goals on his way to a richly deserved Rothmans Medal.

Peter Leis (in the headband) tackles Tony Trent of Norths.
