Sending out a whistle for the referees of Brisbane
I was recently contacted by a reader who’s involved with the Brisbane Rugby League Referees Association. The Association will celebrate its centenary in March next year and is evidently planning some festivities.
Specifically, the Association is chasing photos of referees from across the years for inclusion in those centenary festivities and, unfortunately, I haven’t been able to help much so far. My photo library is comprised almost entirely of players, old grounds and other random bits and pieces.
While many around the great game of rugby league like having a pop at the ref when things aren’t going their way, I think we all recognise that it’s a bloody hard job and without the good men and women of the whistle, there is no great game.
I thought I’d send out a whistle in the hope that readers might have some photos of referees from the old Brisbane Rugby League and/or of referees from more recent years.

Anybody familiar with the history of the BRL knows that so much of it’s documentation has fallen afoul of the city’s wild weather over the years – this website wouldn’t exist if it hadn’t.
So, get out those old scrapbooks, dig those old match programmes out from the bottom of your dusty drawers, fire-up the scanner, send me a link, whatever you can.
