I suppose these sort of takes are inevitable, especially with an organ like the Courier Mail. The Federal Government of the day were essentially negotiating an international treaty given PNG independence was pretty much a fait accompli. PNG became independent in 1975. The Torres Strait Treaty was agreed in 1978, and the Torres Strait Regional Authority was established in 1994. It’s a unique arrangement in world affairs.
