Part of 1958 season

In the week leading up to round six, Blackpool and 43-year-old England international Stanley Matthews arrived in Brisbane. The above is a photo of Matthews from Blackpool’s 9-0 win over Queensland at the Ekka in front of a crowd of nearly 12,000 in mid-week.
Blackpool also played Australia at the Gabba, winning 4-2. Given it was ’58 – Di Stéfano and Puskás were in their pomp and Pelé was about to inspire Brazil to the World Cup – a tournament Matthews was not selected to play in – “world’s greatest player” was a stretch. I suppose they were trying to shift tickets.
